Considering Wessex for F1

    Hello!

I'm a final year thinking about applying to Southampton General Hospital/Princess Anne for F1/F2 and was wondering what hospital accommodation is like and how much it generally costs?

I'm currently trying to balance the cost of rent vs where I want to go therefore any help/advice would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure about the accommodation now, when I was at med school it was based a good 30 mins away in the city centre and wasn't the best value for money.

I didn't stay in Wessex for Foundation Training, and I think it's a great deanery, but I do wonder whether there are better places than Southampton to base yourself... My friends who did stay had mixed reviews whereas other places were much more positive overall e.g. Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Poole, Winchester. Basically anywhere other than Southampton!

This is only my feedback though and I wouldn't change your plans based on my words alone!

Thanks for your reply! I will definitely be taking this into consideration. If you don't mind me asking, where did you apply for foundation training & how did you find it?

I went for South Thames because I had family in London and wanted to be closer to them. I did my F1 in a small DGH which I wanted specifically in order to build up good generic skills, and then did my F2 in huge tertiary hospital in central London. I very much enjoyed my F1 year, I lived on site and the town wasn't great, but we had a good group of F1's who supported each other and I was allowed to do a lot at work. I hated my F2 year even though I'd always wanted to work in that hospital. I felt it was cold and impersonal and the programme directors had no interest in us as trainees, perhaps because there were so many of us.

It's a very personal decision. For me I work best in smaller departments/hospitals, although I recognise the need for specialist centres and will rotate round to them again.
