I finished my A levels recently and i want to apply for mechanical engineering at southampton. My grades were A*AAA, with an A* in math and A's in bio chem and physics. I know i have the grades for an offer but is it very competitive? And how much could it depend on my personal statement? I dont have any work experience with engineering of any sorts because in my country opportunities for work or such is limited for students

I don't know for the specific course but if you were to write a good personal statement, I see no logical reason as to why they would reject you as a student. You're obviously the kind of person they're looking for (again, so long as it's a good statement... no one wants an academic who won't participate in university life)

Some statistics can be found here. You would be almost guaranteed an offer IMO.
