The "ooh, you must be very clever, then" reactions are cringeworthy even if you are at Oxford, though. I have a friend who for a while actually told everyone back home she was at Brookes in order to avoid that...

Edit: highly embarassing typo.

lol, i would that to happen to be.

In short, no, it's not a prat of Oxbridge.

Best typing error ever?

Do you ever actually submit posts comprising in excess of one sentence; or would that impede your 'efficiency'?

It's nice to know that some people think i'm going to Oxford Uni when I mentioned that I applied to Oxford Brookes. Makes me sound intelligent until they realise they are two completely different unis.

Its all pretty cringeworthy though isnt it! I know you probably dont do this but the kind of people that say yes I go to Oxford, or I go to Bristol, when really they go to Oxford Brookes or UWE are very sad individuals!

Yeah you're probably right:biggrin:

It's always funny when you're chatting to someone who slips things into the convo like "when I was at Oxford...", and you cotton onto the fact they're a bit of a thicko and go "you were at Brookes, weren't you?" as they turn bright red.

Haha I find alot of students at Anglia ruskin say that- well with cambridge rather than oxford.

Rather than saying 'I go to Anglia Ruskin' They say 'I go to university in Cambridge' and of course people assume they are at Cambridge.

It annoys me when people say that. Or you ask where they go to university and they tell you "Edinburgh" and they're actually at Napier or Heriot-Watt. If you ask someone where's they're studying you want to know which university, not which town, usually anyway.

Exactly, and they do it conciously because they know that were they are going is very ordinary but if they say Bristol, or Edinburgh then it sounds way better. Until you get found out and you just look like a prat that is!

I used to say that I went to Brighton (I actually went to Sussex) because I found that an alarming number of people don't know where the hell Sussex is...But slightly less of a distinction

Sorry that cracked me up!

It's the same with Southampton and Solent students, 'oh i'm at southampton' often means 'I'm studying at Solent'

Yeah I have a friend who does that with Sheffield, but goes to Sheffield Hallam. Nothing wrong with that but saying so makes him sound like the biggest idiot ever.

One of my mates goes to Oxford Brookes, and to avoid confusion he just tells people that he goes to... "Brookes". He rants at people who try to make out that they're at Oxford, particularly since he's proud to be at Brookes as it is.

In a nutshell, Oxford Brookes is not a part of Oxbridge.

Trying to clutch some prestige that they clearly don't deserve is pathetic.

It really is, and its so so cringeworthy and delusional. My friends both do it with UWE and say Bristol, I actually have to correct them if they say it in front of people I just cant take it!

Reply 37

I've yet to come accross anyone from UWE who doen't say they go to Bristol. In fact, because people have become so used to this, when I say I go to Bristol they think I mean UWE as far more from my area go there.

It actually annoys me, I know it should not but to say you go to a prestigious top 10 university when in fact you go to a crappy former poly is really sad on the part of students that say it.

It really annoys me as well. A few weeks ago I was with someone who goes to York st John and when we where in a conversation with someone else, I said I went to Bristol and they said they went to York. As by Bristol they thought UWE, you could see they held the other person in higher regard.
