Why is so much of Britain lagging behind the rest of Europe in terms of cultural sophistication. Why must every high street be the same, endless betting shops, fried chicken, fish and chips, woeful pub rock. There didn't seem to be any issue at all about getting a quality coffee or finding some late night jazzy lounge grooves when I was in Greece/Italy recently. Its good that Costa/Cafe Nero and so on have really improved cafe culture in this country during the day, its just a shame that things are still really primitive once the shops close.

Money/ propserity and culture. They would open if there were customers. Pubs used to be the social hubs. Coffee shops are only a recent phenomena. They also have vetter weather in Greece. I'd rather live here than there.
