I found this on the university website,

When you come to the end of your first level (ie at the end of the first year if you are a full-time student) you need to pass all your modules in order to proceed to the second level. You can re-sit any modules that you fail in August/September. If you fail one resit you proceed but you lose your Honours. You can recover Honours by passing all your modules at the second level. If you fail more than one re-sit, you will normally be required to withdraw from the University.

When you come to the end of your second level (ie at the end of the second year if you are a full-time student) you need to pass all your modules in order to proceed to the third level. You can re-sit up to two modules that you fail in August/September but if you pass them your mark in those modules will be capped at 40%. If you fail one re-sit you lose your Honours. If you fail two re-sits then normally you will be required to withdraw from the University. If you fail three modules in June then you can resit two of them but can then only proceed to the Ordinary degree.

Good luck in your resits :smile:

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what if you fail a resit in the first year and one in the second? do you just lose your honours or do you have to withdraw?

Neither.

Dropping one non-essential module in the first year has no effect, as each of the various requirements for degrees will say something like "360 credits (or 340 if carrying 1 failed module from your 1st year)"

If you drop a module in the second year as well, you will need to either pass it by compensation overall, or lose out on honours overall.

Example

1st year

50 50 35 20 40 45

=> resit 2 to get

50 50 40 28 40 45

=> Go on to second year ordinary

40 35 40 50 55 55

=> Fail it again at resit, go on to third year ordinary

50 50 45 50 60 55 (worked a bit harder this time)

You have: 320 credits at first, your 35 from year 2 can be passed by compensation as you average over the degree is 49, giving you 340 credits, which as the 20 failed were first year credits allows you to pass the degree.

With an average of 49 they may consider either a III or a II.2 depending on personal circumstances etc.

If the failed module from year 2 was failed at below 30%, they can at most only award an ordinary degree.
