I'm applying for Economics, there's a small part in my PS where I critique the current economic system. Is this alright?

It's ok but you need to remember that your PS is about YOU and not an essay.

If it's relevant to why you want to study Economics and it doesn't waffle on or go into a rant, then it could be a valid part of the PS - we'd really need to see it in context to be able to make a sensible judgement.

Sounds good - it shows you're interested in your subject and have your own ideas about it. If you're applying to universities who interview, it also gives an interviewer something to ask you about and challenge you on.
