    Hey,

    So I've got a homework question which is gradually transforming by brain in to mashed potato!

    Here it is..

    Identify which of the following compounds contains ions and state the formal charges on the ions: NaCl, N2, MgO, AlCl3, and CO2.

    Now, I'm not asking for someone to come in and give me the answer to all of them, I'm just after how I can find the answers, I just don't understand after a long time Googling... Thank you in advance!

    In general, metals + non-metals produce ionic compounds.

    The charge on a metal ion is the same as its group number (old numbering system where group 13 = group 3)

    bonding of 2 metal elements = metallic bond
    bonding of 2 non-metals = covalent bond
    bonding of 1 metal and 1 non-metal = ionic bond

    So NaCl = Na+1 (metal) Cl-1 (gas) = NaCl (ionic compound)
    N (gas) + N (gas) -> N2 (non-ionic)
