Ochem help

    • Thread Starter

Hi! Can someone help me with this problem? The tutoring center at my uni didn't know what it was asking lol. Thank you

    Link to question:

Use the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog rules to assign a priority to each group, orientate the molecule so the lowest priority is behind the carbon, then assign R (priority of attached groups increases clockwise) or S (priority of attached groups increases anticlockwise) to the carbon.

The question is asking about the stereo chemistry of the given compounds/Molecules. First you need to identify the chiral carbon if it has one, if not it is achiral. Then what you need to do is assign the atoms numbers 1 to 4 based on highest atomic number. After this you need to arrange the molecule so the lowest priority substituent faces backwards. Then mentally move from substituent 1 2 and 3, if 123 goes clockwise then it is R if it goes anti clockwise it is S.
