I want to study an accounting qualification called aat level 4 but can't afford tuition. I was thinking about self-studying and arranging a time where I could turn up somewhere and sit the exams - they are computer based. Anyone know how I'd do it? My initial thoughts are taking the exams at the same time a local college takes them

I think you'd be better off contacting your local FE college and enquiring about entering as a private candidate. Most will accept you (for a fee).
