    Currently covering basic radioactive decay in a lecture and I get it but the charges don't make any sense to me;

    Alpha radiation emits a He nucleus (2+) but the charges of the other species don't change
    U(238/92) --> Th(234/90) + He(4/2)

    And beta radiation, neutron (0) --> proton (+) and electron emitted leaving Nitrogen positively charged
    C(14/6) --> N(14/7) + e(0/-1)

    Really confused, is it just due to the charges just not being written into these equations any where including text books, or am I missing something?
