I'm going to be an international student in the UK. Is there any way to find acxommodation prior to my arrival in the UK ( online?). I just want to make sure I have a place to stay and not end up under a bridge.

    spareroom.co.uk for sure

That's where I found my last 3 places for uni (although I lived in the UK at the time so could visit)

I also rented places myself through sparerooom, and international students would often Skype so I could show them round with my tablet and answer any questions*

Your safest/easiest option when looking from abroad is halls, either uni owned or private, as you can generally ensure you get a room as described/as in the photos. However failing that then make sure you have 'looked' round any flat via skype before agreeing to it.
