There are certain rules surrounding it - This stems from the hallucinogenic properties of wormwood. Im not sure about the purchasing of it by the bar - you can buy it in the supermarket and offie FFS. I do know that generally you are restricted to the number of shots you can have - usually 3.
you can buy it some bars... i know The Rescue Rooms in Nottingham stocks the 50% version, they will only sell 2 shots to one person though, and shots are rediculously expensive (about £4 i think)

I found a shop that stocks the 85% stuff

Absinthe is legal. It sounds like a weak and silly excuse not to give it to you. Unless you live in America, where it is illegal.

wikipedia
The European Union permits a maximum thujone level of 10 mg/kg in alcoholic beverages with more than 25% ABV, and 35 mg/kg in alcohol labeled as bitters.[45] Member countries regulate absinthe production within this framework. Sale of absinthe is permitted in all EU countries unless they further regulate it.

Yeah take it from me I live in America and everything worth doing or consuming is illegal here. Thank god I'll be at UCL within a few weeks.

Incidentally...the correct way to drink actual full strength absinthe involves burning off as much of the alcohol as possible and mixing it with ice water and sugar....even though it has wormwood which is a hallucinogen it also has so much alcohol that if you just take 3 or 4 shots of it you're only going to get drunk and this will totally overpower any effects of the wormwood. I know way too many people that just pound down like 5 shots of absinthe and then claim it didn't work and they only got drunk....this is why. So if you get some actually full strength stuff...do it right...burn off the alcohol...typically by soaking a sugar cube in it and lighting it and dropping it into a glass of absinthe when it starts to melt. This will set the whole thing on fire and burn off some of the alcohol. After it goes out mix it up with water and drink up.

Excess thujone (the psychoactive compount in wormwood) is a convulsant and neurotoxin. Has anyone tried the herb wormwood? It's the bitterest most disgusting substance I've ever tasted.
Around here you're only allowed 2 shots per bar/pub..but of course there are obvious floors to this rule because you can just move along to the next pub and have more shots of the stuff.

Never even tried it - I'd pass out the second it touched my lips. Plus I can't stand the stench of it (not a fan of any aniseed drinks really - Absinthe, Sambouca, Ouzo etc.)

Apparantly if you water down an anisette drink like absinthe, pernod, sambuca etc, it will go cloudy?

It is this that is illegal... also done with sambuca and you suck the gas through a straw/plastic tube e.g. the plastic casing of a pen although the way I've seen it done is you set the actual drink alight, drink it, add the ice cube to the glass and suck the gas.

yep.

i bought a bottle of the la fee stuff which is around 68% and have done a few shots. it is stronger than vodka but it's bearable.

when i shot it with my housemates, they wanted to do it outside incase they were instantly sick haha.

Totally irrelevant but apparently Van Gogh cut his ear off after drinking Absinthe.

I don't know about the others, but Pernod does. This is because it's oil-based, and therefore doesn't dissolve in water. If Pernod is yellow then it means it's been watered down. If only the optic is yellow then it just means they've cleaned the optic and some water was left behind :P
yeah - its the same thing for all as its the chemical that gives the anisette property that is not water soluble - Just never tried it - why would I water down alcohol :p:

As far as I've heard it's legal. And I've had three shots before, and I was allowed them. Not sure of I asked for anymore drinks..,. it's a little hazy. lol

(I can manage two, the 3rd was free!! As it was free I thought I may as well drink it lol!)

Word to the wise: don't get lazy and try lighting absinthe in a cocktail glass. That way lies shards of broken glass and burning alcohol all over the floor, and various other disasters.
Not good when you're already drunk.

*sighs* Ah, for my mis-spent youth...

Yeah good point I should have mentioned this in my previous post. Another thing to mention is if you light the absinthe and let it burn for a minute or 2 DO NOT immediately pour ice water into the glass....it might crack from the heat and then cold.

There are no laws in the UK regarding "absinthe". In fact, there is not even a definition for absinthe in the UK. So a lot of drinks are labeled absinthe, but aren't actually absinthe. Just general laws that affect all alcohol, such as the maximum concentration of alcohol allowed (which is why imported absinthe from Spain is stronger).
This 3 shot rule people are talking about is a load of rubbish. It is just like purchasing any other drink in a bar. Perhaps they are experiencing managerial level rules, but not laws.
Also it is a highly overrated drink. Don't expect to be getting drunk off it in a shot or two like some people claim.

Isn't the very strong one banned in France?? But not here, I don't think... There may be certain rules as to how you're allowed to consume it though, like doing the thing with a sugar cube and lighting it...

Absinthe for sale in UK = 50% or less. Absinthe bought abroad = 70% or more.

It's not illeagle but you will hear people saying that stuff bought in the UK is 'fake' or whatever, because of the lower percentage.

It's reconed that absinthe gives you a particular clarity in drunkness, but I've never been able to stomache enough of it to be drunk off it alone. But if the person lighting the sugar and doing the water thing knows what they're doing, it is rather nice

But certainly not worth the £5 a shot I have paid for it once. Completely ridiculous. Maybe it was because I was 16.....

Like I've been saying drinking straight shots of absinthe is a waste of time unless you just plan to get drunk really fast in which case several shots of any high alcohol spirit like Bacardi 151 will do just fine.

With full strength absinthe at around 70% alcohol you're never going to get any of the wormwood effects by taking shots....the alcohol overpowers the wormwood and you just get drunk. Every time I talk to someone who claims they drank absinthe and it didn't do anything other than get them really drunk it always turns out they were doing shots.

You need to do it with the sugar cube and dilute it in water usually about 3 to 5 parts water to 1 part absinthe. You also need to drink it slow because the alcohol effects you much sooner than the wormwood.
