Reading this article on how the US is getting coverage about Hurricane Matthew yet barely a mention in Haiti where hundreds have been killed by it http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/...-a7351236.html

I'm a big extreme weather fan and have posted threads on systems before (sadly they garner little interest) however for the past week i have indeed been glued to weather forums monitoring the progress of Matthew.

Unfortunately for Haiti it was hit with the full force of a category 4 hurricane at the time (it had completed an eyewall replacement cycle, was in near zero shear and was deepening). The US has suffered severe flooding but it should be noted that they avoided a direct hit while it was still a major hurricane. They got lucky.

This was Matthew as it struck Haiti. Note the near perfect symmetry and dark convection indicative of a system free of dry air or shear and very likely strengthening..

I saw another image close up and it was quite freaky as it looked like a monster's eye.

    Aye,

The two things you don't want to see when a hurricane is near you is an image like Matthew's (means near perfect conditions) and the look of a rugby ball with a pinhole eye (means it's about to rapidly intensify).

Thought i'd add that Hurricane Nicole will be declared a Major Hurricane tonight, it'll give Bermuda a near direct hit tomorrow.

Bermuda is the purple line near the top.

Also a note that Goldman Sachs believes that Mathew will cost the US $10bn and with over 1000 dead the name will be retired.

Hurricane Nicole has strengthened, sustained windspeeds are now 130mph (higher gusts) and pressure is down to 948mb. She is a Major category 3 hurricane.

In the past 160 years only 7 systems will have hit Bermuda stronger than Nicole.

Bermuda is pretty rich with proper building codes, it should cope pretty well.

God almighty that is a vicious storm, just hope Bermuda does indeed stand up to that battering.
