Do I need to submit a research proposal or not?

I'm applying to do a MRes at UCL. It's a taught Masters.

On the application, it gave me the option to upload a research proposal, if I have one. My UCL application for an Msc didn't give me this option. However, there was no mention of needing a research proposal on the course webpage.

I googled it, and UCL said all research programmes (PhD, MPhil, MRes) need a research proposal, but this was under the heading 'Research Degrees', below 'Taught Degrees', which my MRes is. I'm wondering if the website is therefore referring to MRes' UCL offers that are combined with a PhD.

What does everybody think - do I need to submit a research proposal or not?

You need to ask the UCL Admissions Office as you're in an odd situation. At any uni I've been to, an MRes - "Masters by Research" - is a research degree rather than a taught qualification.
