Can you still be considered for English or linguistics courses if you haven't read anything?

Linguistics doesn't require much existing knowledge since it's not a subject taught at A Level, but with English, unis would want to see enthusiasm in the field. If you haven't done much reading, why do you want to do the subject? Or is it that you don't have any ideas of what to read?

A bit of both really, I've always enjoyed all aspects of English and it's always been the subject I've done well at. What would you suggest to read?

There's a possible reading list in a pinned thread at the top of this forum, I think; you can google up other reading lists for English applicants pretty easily.

Generally speaking applicants have read: some Shakespeare; some Romantic poetry (Wordsworth, Blake, Byron...); some nineteenth- (Dickens, Eliot &c) and twentieth-century novels. So getting some of that under your belt might be good but possibly more importantly I'd suggest reading some things which aren't those things, so that if/when you apply you have something to talk about in your personal statement that isn't the same old texts. You could look up the reading lists/author lists given for some existing English degree courses on university websites and try some of the authors on those that you hadn't heard of before. Challenge yourself to read odd/hard/weird material and see what happens!
