Okay so it's my university flatmate's birthday soon and I don't know if we should celebrate it? And if so how? (He doesn't like going out or drinking)

While I'm fond of my flatmate, I feel like we're in that awkward part in the friendship process whereby we still aren't 100% comfortable around each other. As flatmates we've only known each other for 1-2 weeks. Nice guy but I feel our conversations are often forced.

Anywho what should I do? Buy him a birthday cake and/or a present? Me and my other flatmates have no idea.

Going out for a meal might be a good idea.

Not necessarily. Whenever I've been out for a birthday meal for either myself or friends I've always paid for myself.

ask him what he wants to do

alternatively doing a cheap flat event can be nice (especially if he doesn't drink/some people are tight on funds) - make a cheap happy birthday banner and a cake and then get a takeaway/make dinner together/watch a film/play board games

I don't think you need to buy him anything but a cake and some time spent together will show him you're making an effort and tbh it might help the bonding

it's not so much about whether or not you're best friends but that it's everyone's first birthday away from home and celebrating it alone in your room doing nothing is really depressing, it's nice when people make an effort
