I think, randomly (it was a while back) when I was looking on the BT website, I saw that there was paid-for hotspot that covers Cuths bar, which seemed bizarre... maybe someone can confirm or deny it!

I'd noticed that too. It's actually the internet connection required for the IT box games machine and 2million+ song internet jukebox, which can also act as a WiFi hotspot. I don't believe it's enabled as I've never managed to detect it on my laptop, even when sitting a couple of feet away from the thing!
It actually requires a completely separate phone line and ADSL connection as it can't use the university network as it is for 'commercial purposes'.
I think Esquires coffee shop has just started a free wifi service.
My love for Esquires will increase exponentially if that is true.
To any freshers-to-be: go to Esquires. They have white chocolate hot chocolate and steak and mustard paninis and all their coffee is Fairtrade. Go! It is wonderful!

Ahh that would explain it then! I know Van Mildert is now wireless enabled for the uni network all over the main college building, as are both libraries but other than that I don't know. If it's true about Esquires though then that is a very good thing, but I'm not 100% sure it would be hugely productive for me....

The wireless service is the best thing which ITS has ever done. It is brilliant. Once you're in range the signal is strong, never seems to fail and I have never experienced any issues with it at all. It's also brilliant for surfing the web during lectures. They just need to get it installed in more places now, but they charge Colleges/JCR's for installation and service which puts them off a bit.
As far as I know, Durham doesn't have any dorms. I've never heard of any at any rate. Can't vouch for everywhere, but St. Cuths doesn't have any wireless in the rooms.
I don't think so, but each room has an ethernet jack.
And there aren't really dorms in the UK. At Durham there are colleges, and the rooms are just called rooms. At other universities, there are flats, etc.

Personally, I go for the coffee (which is better than what is on offer in the other coffee shops in Durham) and the really friendly staff.
Anyway, if you want to use their wireless facility... ask at the counter and they will give you a password for it.
Does Brooks Bar/JCR have WiFi? My laptop stupidly doesn't work on the uni WiFi and I want somewhere local to test/fix it cause I can't be bothered taking it anywhere if I won't get it working.

There's a Wifi thing on the roof in the JCR, but it's not switched on/working yet. It's taken ITS 1½ years to install it...
