What is Sheffield like as a city for students? Especially for stuff to do during the day and how does it compare to Leeds because I really like how big it is and the busy city centre and shops (especially high street ones) so is Sheffield similar?

    hi there!

i'm currently a fresher at hallam, so i've been here about a month now and i'm really loving it!

sheffield is much much much smaller than leeds - so perhaps doesn't have quite the variety of shops in the city centre - but there's so much on all the time. if you want to go shopping, Meadowhall is a 5 minute train ride away!

there's currently a literary festival happening across the city for the whole month called Off The Shelf. there are art galleries literally everywhere. i go to the public library; there are coffee shops on every street corner; things are happening all the time! a lot of the times on weekends and evenings there are too many events and i have to decide which i want to go to!!

there are loaaads of gigs here, especially for smaller bands, and if you're into bigger stuff leeds and nottingham are so close on the train.

in regards to things inside the uni... the students union are doing things all the time during the day and during the night!

if you're big into drinking and clubbing you will find it sooo easy to socialise. most of the sports societies have a weekly social, and every wednesday there's hallamnation too! from what i understand the clubs here are fun without being too big, and there are a variety of nights with different types of music on depending on what you're into.

if you're more like me and a little more sedate, then there are definitely other things to get involved in! there's a tea drinking society; a knitting society; a harry potter society; a visual arts (cough[anime]cough) society; a sci-fi and fantasy society...... the list goes on. hallam really push volunteering, so there are also volunteering opportunities, including volunteering at a local RSPCA dog shelter!!! a lot of societies also do "sober socials", where no drinking is required.

depending on where you live, as none of the halls are actually owned by the uni, there are often social things happening in your halls too. in mine we've had a pizza night and i think there's another pizza night happening later this month?

anyway, if you have any other questions please feel free to ask. i honestly really love it here and i'm so happy!!! much happier than i had actually anticipated

Thank you so much for replying definitely feeling more confident with Sheffield now and think it will go in my top 2 if I get an offer. It sounds amazing especially the volunteering with RSPCA and I love the thought of the competitions between both the unis!
