Is size 12 considered fat?

Hi, I'm a size 12 and always have been. Nobody has ever said I'm fat but lately the media obsession with weight has made me aware that some people actually consider a size 12 to be fat eg. Jen Hunter, Make me a supermodel (google her)

I was just wondering how many people agree with this? I'm trying to slim down to a size 10, which as far as I know has never been considered a fat size, but should I just learn to be happy as a 12? I know it depends on body type sometimes but I'm about 5''7 so average height.
Thanks

At 5'7 I'd never consider size 12 to be fat, but it does really depend on body type. Unless you're very short I don't think size 12 can be the actual term of fat, maybe in a media sense, but not a real sense.
No. I'm a 12 and someone recently asked me if I was anorexic, I just have wide hips but little fat, and even if it was fat that made me a 12 clearly it's not enough for a 12 to be considered fat.

NO its not... I dont like girls too skiny (i.e. size 0) its just not sexy.

And dont forever worry what media says... or you wont ever be happy, at size 12 you will probably look normal weight and it porbably suits you.

I would prefer to date a happy size 16, than a forever worried size 2 who wants to be a zero.

12 is perfectly acceptable.
Im 5ft 8/9 and between a 10-12 and I dont think or have I ever thought of a 12 to be classed as fat.

Ignore the media and just be happy about yourself.
For your height I doubt that you are fat.

i'm 5"7 and size 12 in trousers (size 8/10 in tops - pear shaped) and even though i don't feel fat i often wonder if other people consider me to be.

It seems like a size 8 is the perfect size and size 10 is acceptable, anything above that is 'chubby'. grr

size 12's unite! lol

That's another thing so misleading about the media, it's NOT a size 0 over here, it's a 4. We're not American!

Not a dig at you btw, just silly americanisation (if that's even a word...)

Most men prefer curvy girls, i definately do. Dont believe all this media hype about size 0, it looks disgusting. Id have a size 10-12 over a size 0 (4) anyday.

they didn't think jen was too fat... they just thought she was too fat to be a fashion model (not plus size model), which is important in that line of work, as designer clothers are made in sample sizes... not a size twelve

in society i wouldn't say size 12 is fat, but i supose it depends on your height. you cannot determine whether a person is 'fat' or not based on clothes size alone, as their height has to be taken into account (from a health perspective). From an appearance point of view, different people have different oppinions on what they feel is fat or not... i don't think a size 12 is anything to be worried about when the UK national average is a 16!

look at what your BMI is (there are many websites offering BMI calculaters - just google it) and you will see whether you are overweight or not.

If I was a size 12 I would be fat. One of my friends who is tall (and has hips!) is size 12 and she is slim and lovely. I highly doubt you're fat
I don't agree with this at all. SIZE 12 IS NOT FAT!

On Friday, I went to the doctor's and was waiting in reception. To pass the time, I picked up one of those horrible, trashy magazines. One article was a double-page spread of Kelly Clarkson and her 'close friend' saying that she's now 10st 7lbs and a size 12 blah blah blah so she's 'fat'. She's the exact weight and size as me! I was so angry about this that I asked my doctor whether I was in the ideal range for my height and age. She said my weight is perfectly fine and my BMI is 22 - perfectly normal when height and age is taken into consideration and wanted to share this with you because you're the same height and size as me.

Like you said, it all depends on body type - I'm an hourglass (I think so anyway, my profile pic doesn't do wonders :P) shape and have boobs and a bum. Size 8 women can have curves and vice versa. We're both size 12s but could have slightly different builds!

I can go on all night about this, but I won't! I tend to avoid these trasy magazines which mention latest Hollywood diets and put red rings around celebrities' bums claiming they have terrible cellulite etc. I just don't need that - I'm already really self-conscious about my figure anyway and am (slowly) beginning to love my curves after years of battling with self-image problems.

Anyway, size 12 is perfectly normal. If you want to slim down to a size 10, do it for yourself and not because Jen Hunter thinks you're fat! You say that nobody has called you fat - there you go! Love your body!

I can get into a UK 4, which is a US 0 but i dont obsess with my weight, have no eating disorder and eat whatever i like. Its just my body's natural size and i cant help that although most of the time i just wear a size 6.

A size 12 at that height is perfectly normal, attractive, slim - anything but fat! Seriously, this media obsession has got out of hand; it's having an effect on all of us and it's horrible :frown: Your size sounds natural and healthy to me

Size 12 is not fat at all, especially if you are tall!!!
Im a size 10, and its crazy because i think of myself as fat too but when i actually think about it, its not a 'skinny' body that i want. If you offered me a 'skinny' body, i'd give you it back. I really like being curvy, for me its toning. I would love to be more toned, maybe if you did a few toning exercises you'd feel better about your body, but you certainly dont need to lose weight and become a 10.

A size 0 person isn't necessarily any thinner than a size 10-12 person. And a size 10-12 person isn't necessarily any curvier than a size 0 person. Take your own advice, and don't believe all this media hype.
I think Jen Hunter looks fantastic. The other girl has legs like twiglets.

I am a size 4/6 and 5ft 10 but that's natural for me. I can't help it. I have a fast metabolism and diabetes but I also figure skate and run a lot. I am sick of girls asking me how I lost 'all that weight' and what diet do I use. I eat like a horse! In fact, as I type I'm munching on popcorn.

Media hype is very dangerous. If you're happy the way you are then **** the rest of the world!

Bit flabby.

And re Jen Hunter - she was far too fat to be a model. At least 2 dress sizes too big. Harsh but true.
Personally I think an untoned size 6 looks a lot worse than a toned size 12?

Edit: To the above ^ ... 12 doesn't equal flabby and 6 doesn't equal tone. Definitition and size are two completely seperate things!!
