I have just started uni and am over 60 and disabled. I have sent all my paperwork in and after contacting SFE yesterday was told that some of my paperwork had been damaged. I had previously spoken to them and no mention of this. My birth certificate is damaged and they are returning the paperwork. I will now have to get a new one and supply more paperwork. Why has it taken so long for them to tell me this and after I submit more paperwork. I am struggling to meet the costs of my 100 mile round trip.

You know that you can't get a Maintenance Loan if you're over 60? Are you talking about Disabled Students Allowance? That's the only way you could get help with a commute (and then only if it was different to the way you'd travel if you were able-bodied).

As for the reason for the delay, we have no way of knowing. Probably one department not talking to another, but that's just a guess.

Have you spoken to your university? They will do a hardship fund.

What is the 100 mile round trip for?
As poointed out be aware that funding support for over 60's is limited.
