I'm a biology student applying to them on a sandwich year and the application was going fine until I read the following question. One of the sections asks "Describe succinctly a major piece of scientific work that you’ve undertaken". As a student going into his 3rd year, I have little to no practical experience unfortunately due to lack of success with summer placements. How am I supposed to write about a 'MAJOR' experience that I have not had, yet. Should I just give up?

Why don't you ask one of you're lecturers if you can do some research experience with them?

Major can be very relative. You will have done practicals and maybe even a min-project by this stage so pick something to talk about and make sure you cover what they're looking for. They're mainly concerned with your skills with thinking about and approaching scientific work rather than what you did specifically.
