    Hi,

Please could someone tell me about data roaming and why it is advised to switch it off before taking your phone (my one is on contract) abroad on holiday?

Alternatively, please could you tell how to do this? I vaguely know how to.

    Thank you!

Sometimes, when you use your phone in another country, you can get charged a lot as it wasn't a part of your contract to use it elsewhere. Therefore, to ensure this doesn't happen, some people say to switch your phone off (you can also stick it in aeroplane mode whilst you're on holiday - it'll do the same thing and you will still be able to turn the Wi-Fi back on and connect to Wi-Fi)

If you want to see how much your contract will charge you for using your phone abroad, you can google EG "EE roaming charges", "orange roaming charges", "virgin mobile roaming charges" (obviously replace EE/orange/virgin mobile with your network). Some networks provide plans for using your phone abroad.

Not all contracts cover using your phone abroad. As a result you may think you are using what you paid for when actually all the data roaming is costing you an additional fortune. Turn it off unless it is explicitly stated in your contract that your contract package is valid in the country you are travelling to. Some packages offer X amount of minutes or data in European countries for example.

To turn off data roaming you'll have to hunt about in your system settings. Without knowing what phone you have we can't say exaclty how. The procedure is different on an iPhone and an Android phone, and will vary quite a bit across different models and versions for Android.

Ideally go talk with whoever supplies your contract. Ask what comes with the contract and get them to show you how to turn data roaming off.
