So I'm thinking of applying to Medicine as a postgraduate but there's just one thing I want some closure with. I was reading that when you graduate you have a provisional registration with the GMC for a maximum 3 years 30 days and after that your registration expires and you have to start a Foundation year. What happens if you do not get a place to complete the Foundation Year One? Do you still stay registered as a Doctor?

That deadline applies more to those who decide not to complete fy1, for whatever reason. Realistically you're not going to not get a foundation year place. Even in years where it has been oversubscribed, places have been found for everyone. The state of medicine at the moment means its likely to be undersubscribed and so thus getting a place won't be a concern.

And if for whatever reason, you don't start a Foundation year, you can always request to have your provisional registration removed. You can give it up and then restore it when you're ready to start. So you don't waste any of the time limit. As the limit only applies whilst you're provisionally registered.
