Is the UK the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural country in te world?
I'd say it is probably one of the most tolerant when we consider the likes of France and Russia [but then again, what countries aren't in comparison with those two]. One great quality about Britain is that it is multicultural and largely tolerant, once we get past the newspaper headlines that is. We're certainly one of the most ethnically diverse countries within Europe, and I think that's something to be proud of.

Why? If race isn't supposed to matter why is it preferable to be ethnically diverse? Surely that implies that ethnicity does have some meaning or significance?

No, just that we are attracting people to our country . Nothing to do with race.

Ethnicity does have meaning and significance. That's partially why living in an ethnically diverse culture is something some people are proud of. I don't know where the 'If race isn't supposed to matter why is it preferable to be ethnically diverse' came from - no-one's denying that ethnicity is important (although you've used race and ethnicity interchangeably there).
So you might admit that different ethnicities have some kind of differences which are not only physical but psychological also? Otherwise why is ethnicity significant?
I think cottonmouth's signature suggests why a multicultural society is a good and significant thing. It means we benefit from things developed by foreign cultures.

unfortunately we are not a multicultural society, that would imply we are many races, creeds etc all living together peacefully, i think we are a multi culture society. The different races dont live here interacting with each other, they live (not all but many) people live withing thier own ethnic communities deliberatley isolating themselves from each other. Probably because its easier and makes it simplier for them to discuss things having the same languae, backgrounds etc. But also because of thier own inherit prejedices and racist/religious views. For instance in brum with little somalia and little india (to use brum slang) two communities living right next to each other yet thier is an invisible line that divides the two. the polish guy i work with is very racist and according to him its a view held by the majority of his people especially where germans and russians are concerned (big suprise lol)
Maybe it varies from place to place and race to race, those who tend to come from 2nd and 3rd world countries tend to be those who live in isolated communities where more first world countries, american irsih australian, french german etc interact more easily with the native populace
If we are, it certainly wasn't out of choice, more of a mass invasion. I try not to be judgemental and I'm certainly not racist but I'm feeling quite bitter recently. I keep being preyed upon by african men, yes it is always african men, who seem to think I'll be interested in them if they scare the **** out of me by getting too close and asking intruding questions when I'm on my own, I've heard the same from my friends.

i think India is probably the most ethnically diverse and mulitcultural country in the world. Individual mother tongues in India number several hundred, and 24 languages are spoken by more than a million native speakers, 114 by more than 10,000. It also has every single major religious community living in India from the Jews to Buddhist. The multiple families of Indian cuisine are characterized by their relatively extensive use of spices and herbs. Indian cuisines vary, reflecting the varied demographics of the ethnically diverse subcontinent. They are also characterized by a wide assortment of dishes and cooking techniques. Well i could go on but here are a few pics from the net i got of the diverse people of India:
Isn't something like 96% of the UK still populated by White Anglo-Saxon Protestants? I'd say we must be one of the least diverse developed world countries.
