For my assignment I have to produce a report that describes the following events in meiosis and explain how they lead to genetic variation in an organism
a)Crossing over
b)Random assortment of chromosomes
c)Random assortment of chromatids
I have discussed genetic variation due to crossing over and random assortment of chromosomes but I don't understand the third event regarding chromatids
Can anyone help?

Random assortment of homologous chromosomes happens in meiosis I whereas the random assortment of non identical sister chromatids happens in meiosis II. The mechanisms are exactly the same as they both reshuffle the genetic material - they just happen at different stages in the cell cycle.
