Chemistry help with polyatomic ions

    I am actually a year 10 GCSE student but seeing as this wasn't actually in GCSE I figured that i would put it in A level.

    I was wondering is there a way to work out the charge of a poly-atomic ion rather than just simply remembering and recalling it.

    For example, I can recall that the formula for the poly atomic ion hydroxide is OH-, but how do you find out that the charge is -1?
