Evidence for shells in ionisation trends Watch

how is there evidence for shells in atom and in periods.

I looked at all my resources and online I still have no clue!!! Does an atom need to have single filled sub shells for it to have low ionisation energy... I have no idea!!

Also, what electron configuration must an atom have in order for it to have a low ionisation energy, i'm talking about the way oxygen and nitrogen have different IE but similar electron configurations

    Plz help ;(

Evidence for shells - There are large increases in IE's at some points for an element, take Magnesium for example (making up numbers) it could go 1000, 2000, 10000, 11000, the increase from 2000-10000 is when you go to a new shell as the electrons are now closer to the nucleus and have a stronger attraction for it and more energy is needed to overcome this.

Oxygen would have a lower IE than Nitrogen due to the outer electrons being spin paired in the p orbitals, so there is a slight repulsion between the electrons which means less energy is needed to remove one.
