The liberation of Mosul began this morning, as 10,000 Peshmerga pushed forward from their starting lines to capture the outer suburbs and villages of Mosul. Later today or tomorrow, 40,000 Iraqi Army, Iraqi Police and Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (along with allied air power and British, American, French, German and Australian special forces in support) will push forward from their starting lines toward the city.

The Guardian is liveblogging the battle. This may be the largest ground offensive since the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, and certainly the largest co-ordinated operation by Iraqi forces since the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.

And you can see a very detailed battlemap on LiveUAMap. The Kurds are making excellent progress, they've already progressed around 10 kilometers into ISIS-held territory, along a broad front around 50 kilometers wide.

Fingers crossed for the soldiers in the opposition armies to Da'esh, the innocent civilians attempting to flee Mosul and those trapped. Losing Mosul would be the most crushing defeat that Da'esh would have faced so far.

Agreed. Mosul has been a huge money-spinner for them, although Raqqa is more central in terms of hosting the top leadership, Mosul is around ten times the size of Raqqa and allowed them to collect substantial amounts of taxes. It also gave them access to expertise from the university and all the other resources that come with controlling a city of two million.

The end of ISIS in Mosul will be the end of ISIS in Iraq, and the beginning of the end for ISIS in Syria.
