Asked for ID at Wetherspoons - for coke?

A week or so ago, some friends and I went for lunch, in the middle of the day, to a Wetherspoons. They ordered their food and drinks, and got asked for ID?! The only people not to get asked were Pete, who was the only person buying beer, and myself who joined them a bit later. We are all 20/21 years old.

I'm just really confused as to why they would ID a bunch of 20 year olds, for buying food and soft drinks in the middle of the day? Would they have refused us service had we not had ID with us?

Does anyone have any idea as to why this could be? If anyone out there works for Wetherspoons I'm just curious.

Some bars have a no under 18's at the bar policy, and as they have to think 21 now they ID'd you.

Maybe its that.

Weatherspoons did this to me a couple of times, its cus if you're under 18 you have to be with somebody over 21 to be in the bar.
Yeah, Wetherspoons have a 'Challenge 21' policy where they ask you for ID if you don't look 21. But saying that, I'm 18 and have never been IDed in Wetherspoons (I don't look 21 either )

But you say you're all 20/21 and it was only a coke?! I'm not sure why s/he asked for ID tbh. You can be as young as 16 to have a cider with a meal!

When I've been somewhere for lunch, and they serve Alcohol they've asked me. And I'm 20. I think it's a precaution on their part because some places have the Challenge 21 thingy in place.

Hit the nail on the head. I frequently get ID'd for ordering food during the day.

Yeah I know its just really silly. One of my friends had to walk all the way back to his car to get his driving licence so he could buy a lasagne and lemonade.

I was Ided once in Wetherspoons, but that was at night and years ago when I was 17.

My housemate at university was asked in the first year for ID at ASDA. He was buying a set of forks :p:

I just had a beard, usually worked but on that occasion I was with people who looked younger than I did. So we all got asked.

you still have to be 18 to buy it, and spirits are still illegal until youre 18, which is what most younger people drink :p:

and weatherspoons have had that policy for a long time now, and it used to be alot stricter.

Wetherspoons' security have an 'ID everyone' policy, meaning anybody who could even remotely be under 18. It's an 18+ door policy, although they allow kids in with their parents before about 5pm. You should see one of the cocktail bars we go to. I see people who are obviously 30 getting ID'd in there.
