obviously there is a strong drug culture at many universities but I've heard that you can't fit in at Manchester without taking any? Is this true? If so what drugs are required to fit in?

Take a daily dose of fresh air, that should clear your mind of any silly ideas.

I would strongly recommend against taking drugs *just* to fit in. It can have long lasting health consequences, can put you in dangerous circumstances, risks you getting caught and sent to jail, and it can be pretty expensive. Are those risks worth it for some mates who will most likely only socialise with you if you supply them?
The majority of my friends take drugs and I do not. It has not affected our friendship, they'll be happy with their drugs and I'll be happy with my alcohol (which I know is still bad for you but eh). If you are just taking drugs without a proper understanding of what they can do (both as in effects and consequences) then that's hardly ideal is it?
The people you want in your life will not force you into taking drugs/smoking/alcohol etc. If friendships are based purely off drugs then you're going to be socialising with people you aren't actually interested in and who aren't actually interested in you. You can be friends with drug users without taking drugs, I don't have a problem with others taking drugs but it is just something I have no interest in. Perhaps people have poked fun at me for it, but it has never been genuinely malicious or violent (contrary to some myths).
There may be a large drug culture in Manchester, but that doesn't mean you have to be a part of it, to sound like a parent - you really do not have to have drugs to fit in and have a good time. If you are going to take drugs, then take it because you want to experience the effects not just because you want to impress others.
