I'm about to graduate with a degree in Maths from Stirling. Feel free to ask me anything you want about how the Maths course works (I will try to answer any general questions too if need be).

All I will say is that Maths at Stirling is very much like being back at school in the sense that you are guarenteed to get to know all the lecturers within a year or two. Each maths module has 3x1hr lectures a week plus a 90 minute tutorial (traditional class-style period) every week. Kate and Donald are by far the best teachers I have ever had and I will miss them enormously - they are how all maths teachers should be imo.

Oh, and expect to end up living in the Maths Labs (4X2/4) in 3rd/4th Year (particularly 4th year).

I accept my unconditional for Mathematics and will be starting after the summer. What preparation would you recommend so I can have a head start?

i just accepted my offer today (morning) and now it's evening and i haven't received a confirmation email yet - should i be worried? or does it just take a little time?
If you're on about a confirmation email from the actual university I accepted an offer from Strathclyde about three weeks ago and haven't received a confirmation email yet

Hm, well you'll be doing at least one maths module - MATU9M1 - with the option to also take MATU9D2. M1 is your typical traditional maths in the sense that it is basically Advanced Higher. D2 is more logic based and offers an insight into completely new areas of maths not previously taught in school (mainly logic theory and venn diagrams etc). Donald Smith, all hail Donald, certainly takes at least one of these module alongside Jess. It does change every year but Donald is usually the 1st Year Maths lecturer.

My advice would be to get your knowledge about calculus absolutely watertight and revise complex analysis from AH, perhaps going into a bit more detail too - understand why some things are as opposed to blindly following the "How to pass" books.

I highly advise taking D2 because a huge chunk of of it will be crucial to later modules. M1 is not really relevant to 3rd/4th Year modules (or even 2nd year modules) other than it being the fundamental knowledge needed - think of it like how S1-3 knowledge was relevant to AH. Most of what you will learn in 2nd-4th year will be entirely new topics and concepts.

Typically each maths module will have 2 Class Tests (each 1/6 of your final grade) and 1 exam at the end of semester (⅓ of final grade). Each module also has 3x1hr lectures plus a 90-minute tutorial (classroom style teaching) every week. You will get to know all 8 maths lecturers pretty well by the end of your 2nd year.

I hope that was enough information and I wish you all the best at Stirling

Hello guys, just wanted to ask if anyone of you work part time in the area of Stirling. How easy is to find a part time job (waiter, server, retail) especially if you are an EU student ( meaning employers might prefer British workers).
