International students applying for medicine 2017 entry

As far as I know, international students studying medicine in the UK already pay for their own clinical placements. It is why the school fees are the same as private unis like Buckingham which have no government involvement.
The U.K government are fond of making statements like this just to rattle us. Hate to say I'm used to it. I'll be very surprised if the universities increase fees by such a drastic proportion because UK medical schools are already the most expensive in the world. They'll just end up scaring many of us away and lose billions in the process.

That's a bit disconcerting. Have you studied there long?

Yep. Spent 7 years now. Every single year, something new comes up. From them making us pay health insurance for the NHS (even though we bring billions into the economy) to the blocking of the post study work visa (used to be able to work here for two years after completing your course for experience but they blocked that route), I have seen it all. Anyway, experience has taught me to know the real from the fake. Last year, there were talks about making us go back home after completing our studies to apply for work visas if we managed to secure jobs here (just so they can reject us) but it was too ludicrous to be approved. Just prepare for the hostile environment, especially with this Tory government. The one that may concern you is the talks they are having about international students getting the last picks for specialist training positions, regardless of ability - basically, the scraps the home students do not want. That one may actually be approved because Australia recently implemented a similar system.

It seems I don't like conservatives in any country. Here's to hoping Labor wins and the NHS is in a much better state in 4 years.

Thanks for the heads up about the proposed change; do you have a link or anything so I can monitor the situation as well?

Based on everything I've managed to find so far, it seems that this applies only to schools in England (so those of you in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales are exempt) and that it will apply to those students starting their degree in 2018. Those of us starting September 2017 should still be covered but I'm not going to be at peace until Monday.

Based on these links:
"The Department for Health intends to introduce this policy on international students starting their medical degree in the academic year 2018/19." - http://www.bmj.com/content/356/bmj.j1370/rr-0

Hey! Did you ask your university regarding this? And if yes, what did they say? Is it only for the ones starting 2018?

Yeah, I sent them an email but I'm still waiting to hear back. By all accounts (of people here and others I know), these proposed changes are for those starting in 2018 and later.

I'll let everyone know what my school says once they get back to me.

Alright, thank you!
Got a response!

The school's understanding is that it will only apply to those starting in 2018 so we will not be affected. The government will release their final decision on this in the autumn.
Good news for 2017 entry!

kings and barts rejected pre interview
thankfully have offers from st georges and bsms

Congratulations for your offers! I'm planning on applying for 2018 entry but I had a query on the interview pattern at Bsms. I heard that it's a panel interview for international students and they allow students to have their interview via video link. How was it? Any tips?

what about the rest?
Hi, did any international students apply through clearing at St George's?
Update to the whole fees thing:

The consultation outlined the Government’s intention to increase domestic supply and charge international students the full costs of their course from 2018-19. Following feedback provided through the consultation, these changes will commence in 2019-20 and not in 2018-19 as indicated in the consultation. This means the Government will continue to fund clinical placements for international students commencing study at English universities in 2018-19 while it undertakes further cross government work on implementing the change in 2019-20.

But this is so stupid as we're not subsidized by the government in any way?

Woah so since we're starting in 17-18 does this mean it doesnt affect us? Like our course is still supposedly subsidized for the duration of our course right? I.e or fees aren't changing up to like 90,000 pounds or something in 3 years?

Hi guys, applying from Spain. So nervous.

Got an A* (Maths) and 3A's (Chem, Bio and Spanish).

Btw, I'm taking a gap year since I didn´t get in last year.

Good luck to everyone.

Since you didnt get in the the year you applied, can you please tell me what is one required to do in a gap year to be accepted into the medical schools in the next year? Do we take any specific course to improve our qualifications or be a volunteer in the medical field?
