What's your budget? This is vitally important to know. Are we talking £100, £1000 or £10,000?

I'd probably recommend something in the Canon 1000D range (so 1100D, 1200D or 1300D) and that will give you a couple of hundred pounds left over for lenses. Lenses are arguably more important than the camera, and the kit lenses that come with most Canon cameras are not very good. A poor lens on a great camera will give a poor image. A great lens on a cheap camera can be very good. Make no mistake, though, for your budget you will not be getting anything close to a top of the line camera (for that, add another zero on to your budget for just the camera and then the same again for the lens), but you can still get MUCH better results than a compact camera.

I'd suggest getting a good used DSLR off ebay, make sure it's bundled with a decent lens; Kit lenses aren't actually that bad these days, especially for taking pictures indoors with good lighting. If you have money left over, buy a tripod/lighting- in that order.
