Why not? If they put you there, then surely it's their responsibility to make sure that the basic facilities, like showers, ovens or washing machines, are in proper working order? I don't see how they can have a leg to stand on in that matter. They can't force you to make do with dodgy makeshift solutions.
As for the shoelace business, I can't quite imagine how you'd try to fix the door of a washing machine with a shoelace (it sounds very MacGyverish:p:), but either way, no-one could possibly argue that you actually broke the washing machine with your shoelace. So it would be utterly ridiculous if they tried to fine you for it.

The only reason I can think of that because they pay our rent, bills and wages that they can't afford it. That's what I think though.

Basically there's a part missing in the door and Veronika said if I wound something around the remaining part inside it'd help the door to shut. Like you said, I didn't trust that but I wanted to do my bedsheets this week so I tried and as Veronika neglected to mention (and what Ruud did mention) is that the door might jam. I think it's stupid too if she fines me but she's convinced that it still works and that people need to use it.

That's probably what they'll say. But at the end of the day, it's still you who's paying the rent with a part of your wages which you never really get to see. It may look as though your employer is doing you a favour by putting you there (and in a way it is, because it saves you the trouble of having to find private accommodation), but it's also saving them money. And if they're providing the flats to their employees, it's also their duty to ensure the facilities are in working order. A washing machine which requires you to fiddle around with makeshift contraptions so you can get the door closed is not in working order, it's just a disaster waiting to happen.
Could you maybe settle for some sort of compromise? I.e. get somebody to assess the costs for repairing the door and if the costs exceed a certain sum (say 70 Euro), the remaining costs will be split among the people living in the house, and if it's 70 Euro or less, the company pays?:dontknow: Obviously make sure that whoever assesses the damage won't charge you extra just for the assessment, but usually they won't, because they're hoping you'll get their company to carry out the actual repairs. So normally, the only scenario in which you'd have to pay for someone just for checking which parts would need to be exchanged and what it would cost altogether would be if you asked them to come and then didn't let them fix the washing machine.

If they refuse all that, I suppose getting a cheap second-hand washing machine will probably be your only option (provided your contract allows you to do that), but you shouldn't really have to.

That's exactly what my mum said. She doesn't understand why they'd carry on asking people to use something that's broken which can only lead to it getting worse and something like this happening. I'm waiting for an email back from Veronika as to whether she'll charge me or not and if she says she will be at the end of the year then I'll try and compromise with her or the manager with something like that.

Thanks a lot for your help, this is stressful! As I said to myself yesterday, if they'd repaired or at least said not to use it then things like this wouldn't happen.

Good luck. By the way, do you know whether they put their long-time employees in those flats as well or just people like you, who are only with them for a limited period of time? If it's the latter, they're probably being so rubbish about it because they think they can get away with it, since people won't consider it worth the fight if they're only staying there for a couple of months.

Thanks They've got some interns and some professional translators in them. Mostly it's short term people though so I think they probably do think that and that we can just use the one working machine in the meantime. But as one of my colleagues said yesterday, it won't last forever.

Bah. Ich will wissen!

Dont know if this has been discussed yet, but is anyone else annoyed by the fact that there are now NO German tv channels on Sky? i thought it was a malfunction or something, but apparently none of the german broadcasters want to rent out their channels anymore and its so annoying cos its usually the easiest way to listen to some german each day during the holidays!

I haven't watched TV properly since before exam period so I haven't actually noticed . I thought there was only DW-TV anyway and you can watch everything that they show on there on YouTube.

Yes, I mentioned this on a previoud page as my mum called me and told me. We've both spoken to Deutsche Welle and they said they couldn't reach an agreement with Sky about extending their contract so the channel has gone. I'm sad
