No matter what degree you would - its more likely you won't get accepted then getting accepted in IB statistically - so may aswell go for what you enjoy instead of honing your degree to go for a job which is ludicrously hard to get into - aswell as not being that great at the end of the day...

Im sure you as a person would count more than if you did a history degree or not - Granted university may have a bearing and slight preferences could be given to the chosen field however nothing you should change your degree choice over. If you got rejected, it would hardly be because you was a history grad.

After having graduated in History, there isnt much to do other then apply - unless you want to go for a masters. Throughout the degree, do understand more about IB, global markets etc and also try get an internship in the penultimate year during the summer in IB - this may always not be possible but don't worry, you can try your chance at big4 for corp finance (or do audit/tax if you can't meet those). Just do somthing finanace related and have a good understanding of business.

Basically, im not sure what career i want to follow. I am planning on doing a history degree as not only do i enjoy it but it would leave plenty of career paths open for me.

The careers i am most interested on the finance side is perhaps investment banking. My question is what do i need to do after i have achieved my History degree to pursue this career.

Any help is welcome. THANKS:biggrin:

I believe that if you do History at a target univiersty for IBs; Oxbridge/LSE/Imperial/Warwick/UCL then it would not disadvantage you siginificantly.

Imperial doesn't do history though :P

But nice that for once, it isn't left out in an IB conversation

1. 6th form: Get good A-Levels, go to a good uni.
2. 1st yr: Do interesting stuff, maybe apply for a IB spring week (easter insight thing).
3. 2nd yr: Apply for IB summer internships. Do one.
4. Start of 3rd yr: Either get an offer from where you interned and take it, or apply elsewhere for grad jobs starting the autumn after.
Voila...

Can I get internships after my first year of uni?

I know one or two banks offer internships specifically for first years, but mostly they're for penultimate year students.

Hey Guys,
Just wanted to seek your opinion, basically i would like to know if its worth it getting a part time job (mine would be a cashier at Barclays Cash centre on Sundays or should i get a different one) or just to focus on ECs etc? or both, i dont want my studyign to suffer and aiming for the best i can, i mean im not short for cash, but dont know if it was worth it. Just wondered if you guys IB or aiming for IB have part time jobs? Because when i spoke to a lady in HR at a BB she said that yeah they do take into consideration whether you balanced a job, studies and ECs. she even said one person she interviewed was president of a few Socs, held down two jobs and still managed a excellent degree!

Both is entirely manageable - better to spend 15hrs/wk job 15hrs ECs than 30hrs/week job..

I was only going to work for one day a week, which is about £240 per month, do some people really work 30 hours a week, thats almost 3 days work, i thought that studying took most of the time?
I wanted to hone my writing skills and maybe try and get onto the London Student Paper, and take part in some of the others like sports and attend presentations.

does anyone know whether a degree in areonautical engineering from imperial could lead to a degree in investment banking

Reply 12

yes it could (I assume you mean a job in investment banking)

Reply 13

Post that question in the Uni/Course comparison thread if you want it answering. My guess would be that you could get into IB with most degrees from Imperial, though maybe not front office with a degree in aeronautical engineering. I could be wrong though.

Look jasinder, i think that you should stop asking so many really simple question, i mean look at this: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=7795578#post7795578
This is as good as it gets when you want to know which University will get you into IB. And FYI it generally doesn't matter which course you do just the University you go to.

Im about to watch Rogue Trader. good evening

What banks do internships for first years then?

Reply 17

I'd wish people who don't know what they're talking about would just remain quite, if not just to stop yourself looking like a right prat.

i no this is way way of track but does anyone know which is harder, a level chem or a level physics
