I don't know if this is a simple question to answer, however I'm pretty new to website development and wordpress in general.
I've just taken over the running of a website for my university society and I would like to add a database function which will allow users to search for books in our library by title, author, and related words/tags. I've had a search on google but I can't find much to help me on the topic. Anyone got any ideas to start me off?

You are going to need to get familiar with the idiosyncrasies of PHP and MySQL before you can even delve into the clusterf*ck that is Wordpress development.
W3C/W3Schools provides an acceptable start, as does CodeAcademy - both are free.

How many books are there?
If it's a reasonable number, the two easy choices are: have the list in on an ordinary page and let people use their browser's text search, or have one page per book and let people use the built in WordPress search.
If it's more than a few hundred, the latter won't be an option (unless you like creating new pages and people are going to leave reviews / comments) and trying to do this via WordPress probably isn't what you want to do either.
