I only found out about A*s today, and in the best way possible - being given my coursework back with it on. Ace.

I do find this a bit dodgy though. If you got 300/300 on AS for example, then got 88% on A2 (264/300) you won't get A*, even though you got 94% overall.
A2 is considered to be harder, therefore it is quite reasonable to expect from A* students to prove that they are of high standards by scoring 90% in the exams. Look at the positive side - at least they didn't make it 90% in AS. Would it be so much easier to explain though

we got told if you get an A is AS

    and an A in A2

    it gives an A*
Yes indeed. And if you get a B in AS and a B in A2, you get an A overall. And if you fail (get a U in) AS and A2, you get an E overall.

And they say A levels are getting easier...

There's no such thing as an A* this year.

Or your teachers are misinformed/not as obssessive as I am.

Or, it's just your college's form of grading.

    Basically, no.

I'd trust my teachers over a Welshman...

Anyway, is it for AS or A2?

You can only get A* in A2. The maximum grade achievable for AS is A.

Well in that case, I'll just have to get one next year.

My teacher must have meant A* standard, or been confusing it with A2. (my marks were 78/79)

i have a question. i am currently doing AS and A2 in one year as i lived in austria before. i am doing the old specification. but if i mess up or decide to retake a module next year, would that be possible now that there's the whole A* thing?

I think both. My psychology teacher keeps telling my class about her previous students, with some of them getting to LSE and UCL, who got A* in psychology. And I keep correcting her that it is actually impossible, as first A* are being awarded only in 2010. Oh wells, must be her age.

I think student taking old specification cannot obtain A*. What subject in particular are you having in mind?
