Its a pig farm and you go with the farmer to help feed and muck the pigs and check on the sheep.

How easy is it to get a work experience placement here in the summer? Do they mind having people that aren't vet students yet?
And how does the accommodation work if you don't live nearby?

I was meant to go last year but I had to transfer uni at the last minute so had to give up my placement. However....about 2 weeks ago I sent a letter to Leahurst asking if I could organise some time over this summer. Just waiting to hear back, fingers crossed :smile:

If you want the quickest response, I would start emailing a few people, although a letter does seem more personal :smile:

I've already done 4 days there, but would like to organise at least another week there, but I want to see a lot more of the pathology part. On my last day, last time I was there, there wasn't much going on at the equine part, so I got to see some post mortems which I found really interesting!! So does anyone know if you can just stay at one area for a week?? thanks :smile:

I went when it was a quiet few days so I only got to saw a horse being hoisted onto the table, because there was an xray involved and I was 17 at the time I wasn't allowed to watch. Maybe you could state that you want to see one area in your letter? Where is the pathology part?

why couldnt you see an xray? ive seen them?

although a couple of years ago i was at a vets and they couldnt do xrays there because the nurse was only 16!

you need one of those x ray film badges though if your watching or doing the x ray so maybe they didnt have any or arnt insured for under 18s to be in close proximity with x rays.

haha i hate them badges! I have rang over one of mine and also flushed one down the toilet (by accident of course!) Pain in the ass they are!

Normally, it sounds like they put you in a different area each day of the week, i.e. small one day, equine one day, husbandry one day, farm animal the next and then you return to one of them again on the last day. I didn't find it that difficult getting in, the only problem was I didn't know who to email, so I ended up emailing half of the liv vet staff!! The person to email is: Helen braid, [email protected]. She sorts out all of the experience at leahurst.
Can't help you with accommodation though, it's only a 20min drive from my house!! lol

I am in the process of trying to get my license so that I can drive myself to the equine hospital from Liverpool. I am under the impression that it is relatively inaccessible by public transport!

I think I am booked in for one week at the equine hospital alone, which sounds rather exciting. Were you at the equine unit at all?

Yeah, I was supposed to be there a whole day, but there wasn't much happening, so I got to see some post mortems, very interesting!! :smile:

YEH I ASKED FOR A WHOLE WEEK IN EQUINE AND BIG MISTAKE- I WAS PACKING SWABS FOR 5 HOURS AND FAINTED AND THEY NEVA EVEN NOTICED! I WENT BACK TO MY M8S AT FARM PRACTICE. i LIVE OPPOSITE LEAHURST AND DONT EVEN TRY TO GET TO IT BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT IT IS ****! ONE BUS EVERY TWO HOURS THAT GOES ANY WHERE NEAR! LEAHURST IS AMAZIN THOUGH I LOVE IT BUT I THINK I AM BIAS!

I emailed Helen Braid last week about work experience and she still hasn't got back to me. Yesterday, I sent another email, specifying things in more detail, but still no reply. Is there anyone else I can email at Leahurst about work experience?? Thanks.
