What does it mean if the 'energy from ATP is channelled into the process that requires it, so we say that the hydrolysis is 'coupled' to these energy requiring reactions?

Coupled reactions are where an energetically unfavourable reaction is coupled with a energetically favourable one so the reaction as a whole 'goes'.There are lots of reactions in metabolic pathways where coupled reactions allow a pathway to proceed where it would otherwise be prevented from doing so because of the (lack of) free energy.

A lot of metabolic pathways take advantage of the formation of high-energy phosphorylated compounds which act as intermediates in various pathways.
