Quick question (I'm trying to book my round trip tickets to/from the UK)-- when do people usually leave Cambridge at the end of term??
I'm not sure what date I should book my ticket for :s-smilie:

Look at the end of term date at: http://www.cam.ac.uk/cambuniv/termdates.html

for this coming year, Michaelmas ends on the 30th of November. Most people will leave over that weekend. So book your flight for the something like the 2nd or 3rd of December

Ah, you're a 'binson person!

Last Mich term, quite a few people stayed up to an extra week as your rent will include it. It can be quite boring but there was at least one decent party just after many people had left. Also you do not want to leave on the Saturday right at the end because Friday night there is a bop which generally involves everyone in college being... erm... rather tired the next morning. I'd suggest leaving in the middle of the week after. It's also the week when most of the admissions interviews happen so you can sit in the JCR scaring the young'uns if you so wish.

If you want to know more college-specific information ask in the Robinson thread.

Hey guys, sorry, another question. How many suits? Everyone is talking in the singular, just one then? Cheers

I reckon i'm gonna take two. At least that always gives me the option of a spare if i decide that it's a fantastic idea to throw half a bottle of wine over the other one while drunk. Depends on the money though, will have to see if i've got the pennies to get another one in a month or so...

Yeah I've just bought one but wanted to guage general opinion. I was sorta thinkin two, but might just go more in for smart-casual in general. Cheers

There is a dry cleaners as well, just in case. Very handy when your friend throws up on your gown and skirt...:p:

1 is sufficient, 2 is plentiful, 3 is excessive. I'd start by bringing only 1 and see how often you use it. You just need to change your tie to change your look anyway.

Similarly, how many dresses and/or skirts & blouses?

And what about this academic gown business?

Helenia gave some advice on that earlier in the thread I think. And I heard you just buy the gowns over there.

You can get them second hand from your college when you arrive, or from Ryder & Amies/Ede & Ravenscroft (or something similar, I can't remember the exact names!) in town, but they are quite expensive. For some reason, Sidney's is one of the most expensive, despite peing pretty plain. Odd.

everything else is optional including footwear (unless you want to go into the UL)

^o) i often wandered about the UL in socks/bare feet. practically lived there for a bit while i was revising!

Reply 71

What about white tie? Just rent, or worth buying?

Reply 72

dont buy white tie. It's only really used at Magdelene and Peterhouse May Balls, which you certainly don't have to go to.
I've never used white tie in my time at Cambridge.

So you weren't lying when you said you throw a decent party...

Reply 75

Christ, do you have trouble walking straight for a while after these parties? They sound....brutal.

Reply 76

Well we don't use them all on the same night. That's just a collection of things that have made an appearance during 3 years of cambridge. Who knows what the next year has in store... although one of my friends is getting a house that has a hot tub which sounds promising.

Good idea. I might take two because I've been known to spill drink/food/toothpaste overmyself at socially awkward moments (not that I brush my teeth in public reguarly).

That means I have to cram another pair of shoes in my bag (and polish them, damnit).

Wait the gowns are specific to colleges? Because I was just intending on bringing my dad's old one, cheaper that way especially if Sidney's is expensive. So would a 40 year old Oxford gown not do then?!
