How would they notice? The whole point is that they're hidden so as not to be found :p: !

Can't you just view hidden folders by checking "view hidden folders" in the explorer options? Anyway, as has been said before, they'll never know if you have an external HD to store *ahem* personal data, and if you're really paranoid, you could encrypt it.

How would you find them again? :p:

I'd know where they were hidden  .

I'm a computer noob :p: I don't know how all of this works precisely, so I might be confused!

Heh, ok. Well, basically, hidden files aren't really very hidden - in fact, they're not actually hidden at all if you select the option to show them rather than hide them. :p:

... Oh :p: .

How can I make them so they only appear when I type in a password or something? Or is that not possible *Pokes Vista* :p: ? I'm terrible with computers - relying on others to help me out at Cambridge :o: ... I have a nice deal running with another Trinity mathmo - I give him maths help in exchange for computer help  .

You can, but why bother? If they see 5gb of protected files, they're not gonna think "oh, they must be doing something perfectly legitimate". Either they'll search your computer (which is unlikely anyway) and find something suspicious, or they will search it and find nothing suspicious. Either way, the chances are they won't search it. :p:

What on earth could you have on the computer that is so important and secretive?

We could probably guess...

At the risk of lowering the tone of the conversation further, do people that download and store copious amounts of porn on their computers keep coming back to the same videos day after day? I can't really understand why they'd do it.

Rudrax: You probably could guess some of what I'm trying to keep private, yes, but certainly not all of it :p: .

Nothing illegal - just a variety of things I would rather keep to myself.

I'll back up my stuff on my pen drive and my desktop before I go - thanks for the advice  .

Well, since you mention that topic (which is certainly not all of what I'm trying to protect :p: ), yes, people do. Though usually not day after day - that would get boring I'm sure...

Let's move swiftly on :p: ...

More important to me is the question: why would anyone care if you have porn on your computer? Tons of people probably do, it's not illegal, and it'll stop you downloading it in Cambridge! :p:

Mmm, seems a little bizarre having this rule bearing in mind a friend of mine founded the Cambridge Fetish Society :p: ... Are all people allowed to make any society they want?

Within reason, and with sufficient demand, I reckon so.

dunno, probably a contingency plan if the nets down for an hour

anyway, i was just wondering [and I'm not implying I'm good] how much time rowing / football would take up in a week?

Whether they'd get funding/official recognition off the university is another matter.

On a computery topic, mine is apparently buggered. So I might not be around as much as I'd like for the next few weeks.

True. I guess the only issue is looking the IT people in the eye again if you have something really weird.

Don't know how much, but I know rowing takes up a lot if you're at all serious about it. Football probably less so unless you're in a team.

football, well, let's say a match a week, plus a couple training session. maybe 5 hours. i must confess I don't know precisely how often the teams train (there are multiple), and I'm basing my answer on how often my neighbour left his football boots outside of his door to dry the mud.

rowing, depends on which boat you're in. if you go in a novice boat in michaelmas, there's very little commitment.. 1/2 mornings per week, with you getting away from the boathouse by 9am latest (because of lectures). Time you need to be there is basically the time the sun comes up.

Yeah you're pretty much right. Any good male teams will train 2 or 3 times a week with a match once a week. I'm on a girls team and we only train once a week as the turnout is always so poor, and we have a match once a week. It's worth mentioning that the football season in Cambridge ends at the end of Lent term, so apart from a few casual kickabouts there is nothing in exam term. I think that might be the case with some other sports too.
