I'm retaking my English language GCSE after i got a B in the exam when i expected atleast an A/A*. Anyway, i believe my coursework grade is an A so i'm wondering what mark i will need to secure an A* overall. As i understand, the coursework is worth 40% of the final grade and the exam is 60%, Usually an A is 50/51 marks out of 80 on a paper.

You need about 65 marks to cover up for the A you got in your coursework

So even a solid A* in my exam will get me an A overall? That's ridiculous!

It also depends on what school you go to. As teachers may mark coursework incorrectly. So what school do you go to because my brother teaches in East London so I can ask him about coursework for you.

Do you know what mark you got exactly for your coursework? You don't need 65, that seems too high.

To get a Borderline A* you need 59 marks so to get an A* overall you need to get an average/high A* in the exam to make up for the A you got in your coursework.

If your coursework is an A or above then you should be fine

Just keep revising the exam techniques because probably you have lost marks in some questions from the language paper.

Doesn't it depend on the mark though? If, for example, you get 68/80 (which is a mid A) on the coursework, you need 57 in the exam for an A* overall.

So even if i get 59 on the dot, my final grade would be moved down to an A ?

Here, OP, I've worked it out for you:

To get an A on the coursework you need 65-71 marks out of 80

    If you got....

65 marks on the coursework you would need 58/80 for an A*
66 marks you would need 58/80
67 marks you would need 57/80
68 marks you would need 57/80
69 marks you would need 56/80
70 marks you would need 55/80
71 marks you would need 55/80

This is going off last year's grade boundaries so they may change a bit, but this is what is should roughly be like.
