My teacher said to achieve top grades you need excellent vocab but I'm wondering if this is true. I've looked on the mark scheme for the new spec for L4 and L5 it says that you need good understanding of the context etc but it doesn't say anything about incredible grammar and vocab skills. Is it mainly exam technique or your style of writing?

    Lol this isn't true.

Fancy writing will detract from your work, due to the time pressures and your argument can become unclear with flowery writing.

As long as it's coherent it's okay.

Thanks for confirming so does it come down mainly to exam technique and knowledge?

Yes and also strength of argument. The weaker the argument, the lower the marks. That's not to say weird/new/different arguments are weak - it all depends on evidence, analysis and relevance to the question.
