Was Maradona that good?

I am pretty bored this summer, so I decided to read up about the greatest footie players ever using a combination of sites and youtube. Not surprisingly the 2 names that pop up the most was Pele and Maradona. I'm not surpsied about the former as he scored 600+ competitive goals and won 3 world cups. However, Maradona???????? All I can find is he scored 2 famous goals against England (cheat), won one world cup and was banned twice for taking drugs......:s-smilie: Yet he is seen by many as the greatest footballer...

I mean I looked at his records and he hasn't scored that many goals in contrast with his appearances and he hasn't even won a champions league title. I have seen some footage of him and he looks quite good on youtube but he doesn't look as skillful as Ronaldinho yet i thought he is the most skillfull player with a left foot????

I'm talking about former Argentina captain Maradona not Madonna!

Yes. The best imo.
Oh yes!!! ;yes;

He was incredibly natural, deft, empathic and sharp. It wasn't necessarily a matter of skill alone - his were considerable - but more of vision and ability to kill a game on his own. I've never seen a player do it as well as him - never. He was the first player I grew up watching who was clearly a bona fide genius. The 86 Argentina side was a reasonably good team, not bad of course, but nothing incredible - Maradona made a tournament winning difference. And I don't mean that churlishly - I really mean it.

I saw him once playing for Boca about ten years ago - very much towards the end of his career. Overweight, lazy, an absolute mess. Then he took the ball wide and even his own team mates didn't know what he was doing - he just lifted it with one look, lazy as you like, and put the ball over the keeper by the back post from two feet aside of the corner flag. :bang: Everyone was in shock. ;yes;

It wasn't simply his ability you see - it was his vision to try seemingly impossible things, and pull them off through blind brilliance. Watch him on the ball - it's glued to him. Best close control I've ever seen, bar none.

Its at you not with you :wink:
He was fat, small and a cheat but a phenominal footballer
He was a good football player, but a cheat. Then again there was some suggestion Argentina lost the World Cup of 1994 because Maradona got high.
I'm not so sure really. Even if he had been cleared to play against Romania, I don't think they were ever going to win the tournament that year - Brazil were efficient and canny throughout, and though Argentina did look hot against Greece offensively they never looked potent enough as a unit overall.
I think his cheating and drug taking take away from his overall stature. It really annoys me players with such amazing talents throwing it away like that. Yea he was good but he wasnt the best IMO.
Maradona is a good player but it still hurts how he scored that goal against England in the world cup :mad:

All that ability and he still resorted to cheating and that is what always springs to my mind when he's mentioned- the cheating, sadly.

Yeah he was that good. He's practically considered a living god in Argentina.

Maradonna was twice the player Ronaldinho is
when Ronaldinho practically single-handedly wins a world cup for his team maybe you can compare them
