You are a full-time student studying for a qualification in Business Administration. In order to earn some extra income, you
do freelance work at various companies. One of your courses is about information and communication technology in the
business environment. Because of the knowledge and skills that you have acquired, the companies where you work often
ask you to assist them with their information and communication related functions and tasks.
At the moment, you are assisting the head of the Public Relations Division, Mrs Sheila Abrams, for a cruise line that
operates out of Cape Town. The company operating the cruise is Happy Sailing Adventures. Clients can either make
bookings directly with the company (in person, telephonically, via e–mail or online) or they can make bookings via travel
agencies and tour operators.
The company has realized that their computer systems and network are outdated and want to upgrade by acquiring new
hardware, software and a new, faster network. You have been tasked to solve the problem of how to acquire the most
adequate hardware, software and network at the best possible prices. However, first you have to determine the computer
and network needs of the company by consulting with the staff who use the systems. Use the problem-solving cycle to find a
solution for the problem.
1.1 Identify and give a brief description of the problem. Indicate how urgent the problem is and whose responsibility it is to solve the problem.
