I'm still on holiday now but my mum is at home and she called me yesterday to say I'm in too! I think I might have appealed to the warden, who is French, because I grew up in Paris. I'm really happy because it's great location AND catering! I haven't been able to see the freshers' week guide yet but will as soon as I'm home. I'm really excited! What are you studying? I'm in English.

The freshers plans look cool but the rule book seems daunting

haha don't worry about the rule book too much...while it's not the rowdiest hall the rules are definitely not kept to! ahh and the barn dance was a laugh, in a humiliating kind of way.

Hey, I'm on the JCR this year so get in touch if there's anything you want to know.

Im in CHH, political science. Which considering I was a late application, was a freaking miracle!
Reply 7
u got into ur first choice even though u were a late application, and the hall is oversubscribed! haha that is a miracle! well done though...the warden must've LOVED ur statement!
Reply 8
I applied last year and got in, then withrew my application when a miracle gap year offer came through. I think she let me in because of that, and the whole not being in the country thing made sending in the forms more difficult.

I have now had a look at the Freshers' guide since I got back this morning and I have a couple of problems. I never went to a British school, and in France we don't have uniforms, so I won't have anything special to wear to the school dance. Otherwise, I have no idea what to dress up as for the P party. And what about the barn dance? Otherwise sounds fun, but also busy. I'm looking forward to it!

Hey - don't panic!
Lots of people here don't wear uniforms in school either - it's just like a dressing up thing so just wear like a white shirt and a little skirt (GUESSING you're a girl!) and a tie and you'll look like the classic "schoolgirl" image. It's just a joke thing. No pressure. I can send you a picture of last years if you're totally confused.
The P party is actually for my birthday and I'm not going to enforce compulsory costumes - if you really can't think of anything now, you might come up with something with people you meet at CHH or just feel free to come dressed normally!
Barndance - some people try to dress like cowboys which is always fun but others just go as normal. The only really compulsory thing is sensible shoes!

Anything else, just PM me or post here. No probs.
The JCR events are to give you a great time in your first few weeks, not to worry you!

Are you quite sure it's not in your blue folder of stuff? It's a white A5 booklet. If you're sure it's not, the accommodation office can't help you - either contact CHH itself or let me know and I can send you all the details.

I have a horrible feeling I'm going to be the oldest in hall. Who is the oldest in hall??
Reply 15
I will be 20 the day we move in. (Cake at mine people)

Ah, so you are the publicity girl... OK, thanks for the advice, I'll try out the schoolgirl image for the first time in my life then lol! (and you were right in guessing I'm a girl...) For the P party, I had a sudden revelation when I was in the car talking about it with my mum. Since I grew up in Paris, I think I'm going to dress up as "une Parisienne" with the beret and the baguette and the "J'aime Paris" T-shirt etc. I'm actually quite excited! As for the barn dance, I think I can find a cowboy hat and some jeans which should do the job.
I have a couple of other questions. We were sent an application form for Resnet, which I understand is an internet service in your room which you have to pay for. In the letter from the Warden to your parents telling them how to contact you, it says each room has an internet connection point. Is that what she is referring to, or is there a different way of connecting to the internet without paying for Resnet (which seems to include access to the library or something)? This may seem a bit of a silly question, but I just wanted to check. I also wanted to know if there is a lift up to the upper Fry wing floors, since it is mentioned that A-Fryers have to go up 5 flights of stairs and it might be a little difficult getting all my stuff up when I arrive and down when I leave. I tend to want to bring everything I can think of ;-). Also, just out of curiosity, what size room should I expect in A-Fry? And what's the food like? Thanks for all your help!

don't forget your onions. :p:

Loving the costume idea, very original too! Warning this may be a long post!

OK, Resnet means Residential Network - so yes you do have to pay the fee in order to use the internet connection that's in your room. You pay it now and when you get to CHH there's a pack in your room with the appropriate cables and software to set it up. Doesn't take too long. So basically there isn't a way of connecting to the internet in your room without buying a resnet package, but it's reasonably priced and fast. If you don't want it in your room (though I really would recommend it) there is of course internet (wireless or computers with internet) at the main Arts & Social Sciences Library and in the hall computer room. Hope that answers your question!

A Fry -I spent an awful lot of time there last year! Yes it's 5 floors up - there IS a lift which you can use on arrivals day to get all your stuff up plus JCR members will help you carry anything extra too. This lift can only be used then though, you'll have to walk for the rest of the year I'm afraid! But it's really not that tiring - kept me a bit fitter. The rooms are a pretty decent size, not huge but with plenty of room for all your stuff & quite a few people. I can send you a picture of a room if you like?

Food -I love it, personally. It's reportedly the best in the university! Of course it varies from time to time but there is ALWAYS a lot of choice - at dinner 2 choices of meat main course and 1 or 2 vegetarian options plus a really varied salad bar with loads of different things. So even if you're a really fussy eater there'll be something you'll like I'm sure. Anything more specific you need to know?

Sorry for huge post!

What about garlic? :p: I find it quite funny the way people have such stereotypes about other countries (I don't even own a beret and have never worn one or seen somebody in Paris wearing one. Some people also seem to think we don't wash, just spray perfume on ourselves like Louis XIV did. Oh and of course we write love poetry ALL THE TIME! lol!).
Thanks, your post was very helpful. So I guess I'll have to send in my Resnet form. If a photo of an A Fry room is available I would be glad to see it (maybe then I can assess how much I should really bring ;-) ). Good to know there will be a lift for the 1st day but after that I guess as you said I will be kept fit by the stairs.
I am quite a fussy eater, I must admit. I think it's because I have been brought up in a family where most meals are home cooked etc. I know my brother gets fish and chips weekly in London. Is that the case in CHH? And what about breakfast? I presume Sunday lunch is the traditional roast meet, roast potatoes, maybe even Yorkshire puddings? Oh and is there anything which is a bit dodgy and I should look out for?
Thanks you for all the advice and reassuring.
