I thought I could and I tried to, but then you can't talk to them about relationship issues without looking like you're trying to boast, or maybe you or they feel jealous and decide they can't talk to you anymore. Or, if you hang out with them too much, one of you could start to develop feelings for each other etc. They may get annoyed at you posting pictures with your new other half for example.

Is it better to lose contact or can you stay friends?

Most of the time, no. It's not worth all of the little problems that can happen like the ones you've mentioned. Though I've heard of older people who have managed it somehow.

There is a chance it can work with both of you comfortable with not being together but being within each other's social circles, but I've tried and failed. Such small incidents and trigger the friendship due to your past circumstances so just be careful.

If you may have feelings for her/him still, in that case; can you watch them possible meet someone new from afar?
