In the AS paper for Edexcel SNAB Biology 2016 spec I got a C. I do not struggle to understand the biology but find it so hard to write/work out what the question wants. What ways besides past papers & specimen papers is there to improve my grade?

I had exactly the same problem last year in my AS, I was understanding all of the content but getting bad grades, at one point I was considering dropping biology because ot it! My biology is with AQA but I'm sure it's similar.

I know you said other than past papers, but when you're trying to learn what the exams are like there is really no alternative. I would recommend looking through a lot of past papers (for me I think 4 or 5 was enough), you notice that some questions will come up a lot with always the same wording, and you can pretty much learn the answers to these (a few common ones for me included "what is a species" and explaining why a mutation leads to non functional protein). If you need to do more after that, I would look through markschemes of papers you've already done and look for "keywords" where if you see it in the question, you know it will be needed in the markscheme. Make a list of these and try to learn them as much as possible. For example, in almost every question that asks you how a new species develops (I had problems with this) you will always need to discuss an environmental change, a mutation, and natural selection of the more reproductively viable organisms.

Really, it's ridiculous that we have to jump through these hoops to get good grades even knowing the actual content of the course inside out. At the end of the day, the people marking your paper will be teachers who know all too well how weird the exam papers can be, so don't worry too much about following the markscheme to the letter as long as you're definitely including all the important information.
