# What is a paramter in maths? watch

1. Can someone please define it simply for me.
2. It's not too easy for me to define, but I will try my best.
Consider the curve where k is a real constant. Then varying the value of k will change the curve, so for example the y intercept will be , but even though we are free to make k whatever we want, we treat it as a fixed value, k is constant, it is not a variable.
Another example is the horizontal line . Sure we can change the value of k, but this just changes how far from the x axis the line is, if we were to differentiate we find that .

They're determinable constants which don't vary in a function.

Using as an example, are parameters. You set them to some values which determine the quadratic function. e.g. using , you have .

These differ from variables because with the latter you accept them as an argument (i.e. for the function you can have varying inputs of ) whereas the parameters of a function are pre-determined.
