the best thing you can do is call the specific uni's you're interested in and ask the admissions tutors these exact questions. Nothing like an answer straight from the horses mouth

Cardiff and Aston both ask for AAA from retake students as far as I know... (although Cardiff are more lenient if that was your firm last time... thats what they said to me anyway...)

I decided to do Orthoptics when I missed my grades and it was the best decision I ever made!

I don't really know about the others though I'm afraid...

cif your from london i think city are quite lenient had a mate who applied for optometry she had retaken the year and needed ABB in bio chem and any other subject excludin general studies to get in!!i retook and did physio they dont really ask for higher grades just depends on the amount of applicants that year and how good your ps is and also get some work exp and think about finsihing of an as level that you had dropped if that was the case as i guess u`ve done 3 alevls??just remember if they ask to interview you make sure you`ve got enought to tell them as they may ask what have to done in the year you have taken out!!!

hope that helps

Hello, I am studying Optometry this year. Bradford made me an offer of ABB, I made it my firm and they accepted me with BBC.
Best of luck

Hello, just wanted some opinions.

Finished my A-Levels this summer with ABC (biology, chemistry and german - german was the bad choice!!) and so resitting chem because i was really close to an A anyway! GCSE's pretty good (6A*s and 4As) and I have been working as an Optical Assistant in an Opticians for two years - weekends and holidays during Sixth Form and full-time now i've finished Sixth Form.

Want to apply to optometry at Cardiff and Aston but just read they want AAA from retake candidates. I know people have got onto optometry courses with lower grades than I've got at the moment but will the AAA still be against me because I'm retaking even though I've got a lot of experience? What are my chances?

Hope that's understandable! Thanks for any help you can give!

aston told me they dont increase grade requirements. They stay the same for retake applicants. I've been hearing different thing from different people so im really confused now. Some people have told me that when they applied as a retake student, they were asked for AAA :s-smilie:

I dont think there is much you can do apart from re-sits. You can always do your AS year again of course.. but that depends on your college etc. Good luck!

I am so scared, school has said to apply anyways I have nothing to lose.
Predicted grades at B's? I don't think I have any chance of getting in, but worth the shot I guess. I haven't lost much then again, as I was not going to apply until next year. Let's see how it goes I guess.. I have taken work experience ect so hopefully its okay. I will see, also I was wondering when you sent your UCAS of and how long you had to wait till you got offers for Bradford?
Thanks.

It's ok dont worry: i think most Optom unis accept retakers (except Manchester I believe) and offers are generally the same as first takers (as you said AAA or AAB).
If you actually achieve ABB or BBB you ll still get in (in unis like Anglia, Plymouth or Bradford).
Another option is to do a Foundation year in Life Sciences or Ophtalmic Dispensing in the uni you want to join for Optometry

so another option would be taking a foundation year of opthalmic dispensing isit for 2 years? and then go into the optometry course after that? wouldnt it be more competitive this way? & thank you very much that really helped ;D

If you are really motivated to retake your A levels and get AAA or AAB then my advice is go for it. It looks so much better on your CV and for your future career ...
The Ophtalmic Dispensing route is much more expensive (additional 18k) but probably less competitive as you are against other CCC or CCD students (vs first time AAA students via the retake route)
